[MUSIC PLAYING] Welcome, students, to our Intro to Oceanography course. My name is Doctor Theresa Greeley. I'm really excited to be your professor for this course. 

The course is all about understanding some of the major things that we know about the ocean, how we know what we know about the ocean, and why it matters. We know less about the oceans than we do about outer space at this point in history, so we're really excited that there's a lot of exploration and observation science that's still a part of oceanography, as well as the experimental aspects. 

In our course we're going to be learning about multiple aspects of oceanography. We're going to talk about, of course, the biology, who lives in the ocean, we'll talk about the geology, which helps us to understand the whole formation of the oceans through time, and also about the physical aspects of the ocean, which define the habitat and the environment that the organisms live in. Including the chemistry of the ocean, which has a lot to do with the food that's available, and other resources in the ocean. 

In addition, we're going to make the ocean relevant to us. We'll talk about the ocean's role in our economy, the ocean's role in human health, we'll also talk about the ocean's role just as a great place to hang out and to relax. It's a very beautiful setting, it's a great outdoor laboratory that I have to work with. 

So that's my hope with the class. That you'll leave the class knowing some of the major concepts we know about, and how we know about what we know about the ocean, and then finally why that is important to both you and I. 

So I'm very excited. I welcome you to the class. I hope that I can build on having this amazing career in ocean sciences. Studying the ocean for many years, and now having just the privilege and the opportunity to share some of those adventures, what we've learned about the ocean, how we're able to answer these questions, and why it matters to all of us. So I'm looking forward to the big adventure of the next semester with you in this course.
