The lecture for today will cover a number of things: an introduction to practicum seminar, an overview of the syllabus and course expectations, the BACB experience requirements and the proper way of filling out the BACB Experience Supervision forms. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>As stated in your course syllabus, the practicum courses and practicum placements are in place to ensure that each student attains a wide range of experiences in behavior analytic practices. These experiences will prepare you for future clinical practice. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Practicum seminar is also in place to ensure that you are accruing experience hours according to the BACB requirements. You will also have the opportunity to present on clinical cases and receive and provide feedback on cases. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>I want to provide a brief overview of the syllabus so that you have a sense, early in the semester, of the assignments required to successfully complete this course and can start planning our time accordingly. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>During this semester you will be required to complete the following assignments: quizzes, BCBA training modules, a graphing tutorial, peer review presentations, activity reports, practice a number of skills covered in class, and you will start to work on your portfolio. Each of these activities, and their correlated points, are outlined on the course syllabus and I will describe some of these in detail today. Others will be further reviewed during the week when we cover them in class or also through rubrics, which will be provided to you.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>The course expectations are outlined on the course syllabus but in general you are expected to complete assignments according to guidelines. Most assignments will be available on Monday morning and close on Sunday at midnight, which means you have 1 week to complete the assignment. For BACB experience related assignments, such as submission of practicum contract, late submissions will be accepted because submission of these items is required for you to complete this course however your grade will be adjusted so there will be a point penalty for late assignments. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You are also expected to participate in class, which will include providing feedback to your peers as well as participating in discussion boards. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You are required to adhere to all course policies and USF policies (see syllabus) and you are expected to engage in professional and ethical behavior at all times, especially at your practicum sites. Information on professional and ethical behavior will be provided throughout the course, either via readings, assignments, or discussions.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>The behavior analyst certification board, or BACB for short, was created in 1998 to address a number of issues related to behavior analysis including credentialing of individuals qualified to provide behavior analytic services. The BACB is responsive, data driven, and accountable and its goals include protecting individuals receiving behavior analytic services and to solve social problems by increasing the number of qualified behavior analysts.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You can access the BACB website via the link provided at the resources tab on the top right corner. You should click on access/create account to set up a portal account for you if you don’t have one yet. You should also familiarize yourself with the website and its content including accessing BCBA Forms experience standards, and ethics Guidelines, etc.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>If you ever have a question about your experience hours and experience requirements, you should refer to the BACB experience standards (available on the BACB website). It is very important that you only count activities that meet the BACB requirements as experience hours. Examples of activities that meet the BACB requirement for experience include: conducting preference assessments, functional assessments, and treatment evaluations, etc. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Certain activities that you may complete at your practicum site however may not be appropriate activities and therefore should not be document as experience hours. Examples include attending administrative meetings and diagnostic meetings, implementing non-behavior-analytic interventions, completing forms for billing, etc. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>If you are ever uncertain about an activity, there are two things you can do: first, you can speak to your practicum site supervisor and that individual should assist you in determining whether the activity meets the BACB requirement for experience hours. second, you can refer to the BACB Task list. If the activity you completed falls within one of the categories listed on the BACB task list, it meets the requirement for experience hours. The BACB TASK list is available on the BACB website as well.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>The BACB accepts 3 types of supervised experience: independent fieldwork; practicum, and intensive practicum.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>These differ in: the duration of supervised periods, the number of supervision meetings per period, the required supervision percentage of total experience hours, and the amount of experience hours required to sit for the exam.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>For instance, the supervised period for practicum and intensive practicum is 1 week however intensive practicum requires two supervision meetings per week, whereas practicum only requires 1.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>At USF, when you enroll in practicum seminar, you are accruing practicum experience. Therefore, you may not accrue intensive practicum or independent field work experience while enrolled in our program. From this point and beyond, we will talk about how to meet the practicum experience requirements. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>In order to count your experience hours, you will need to follow the BACB requirements. For each week you must meet the requirements outlined here in order to count your experience hours, which includes both independent experience and supervision. If you don’t have enough independent experience hours or enough supervision for that week, you can’t count any of your hours.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>For practicum, you must have supervision at least once per week, and your supervision hours should be 7.5% of your total practicum experience hours. This means, if you are planning to have 10 practicum experience hours during a given week, you need to have 45 minutes of supervision, and 9 hours and 15 minutes independent experience for that week. In addition, it is important to know that for each supervisory period, you must accrue at least 10 hours of practicum experience and you may not accrue more than 30 hours. This requirement includes both independent and supervision hours.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Now, let’s take a close look at supervision and independent experiences requirements for practicum.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>There are three types of experiences that can be considered as supervision. This means group supervision time can’t exceed 1-1 meeting and/or observation time. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>For independent experience, the BACB requires that supervisees accrue direct and indirect experience hours.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Direct hours usually involve working with clients, such as running discrete trial teaching sessions, conducting preference assessments, and conducting prompt evaluations. The BACB requires that this type of independent experience cannot exceed 50% of all independent experience hours. This means across the 2 years in the program, which is time that will take you to accrue the required practicum experience hours, you cannot accrue more direct experience than indirect experience.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Indirect hours are the activities you complete without the client but that are still behavior analytic in nature. These include graphing and interpreting behavior data; reading and discussing behavior analytic articles, etc. The BACB requires that this type of independent experience make up at least 50% of all independent hours. This means across the 2 years in the program, at least 50% of your independent experience has to be indirect experience.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Now we are going to test your knowledge of the information we have covered so far with this sample scenario. At USF, you are accruing experiences via practicum, and you need independent experience hours and supervision each week. For this week, you have 20 hours of independent experience (10 direct and 10 indirect). How many hours of supervision do you need?</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You need 1.5 hours of supervision. Here is how we discovered the answer.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>As far as the nature of the supervision, you could have either 1.5 hrs of individual supervision or half group and half individual (up to 45 min in group and 45 min individual; or 30 min group and 60 min individual). The 20 independent experience and 1.5 supervision will give you 21.5 total practicum experience hours for this week.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>The BACB has a few more requirements. Below are some required documents and training for you in order to accrue your BACB experience. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Before you can begin to accrue experience hours, you and your practicum site supervisor (BCBA) must complete a supervisory contract. Templates are available at the BACB website and these templates outline what needs to be included in each contract. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You need to complete a contract at the beginning of each experience, at USF, that is each semester. In addition, you and your supervisor should keep a copy of the contract for 7 years (you should keep the original) and you will also submit a copy via canvas. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You need to document your experience hours, on a weekly basis, on a BACB experience supervision form. This form is also available on the BACB website, you can also find samples in canvas. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You and your supervisor are also required to keep copies of this form for 7 years (you should keep the original) and you will submit copies of them to me via Canvas.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>At the end of each experience, you are required to complete and submit a BACB verification form. As the name implies, this form is to “verify” that you have accrued such experience. You can find the sample forms on canvas as well.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>At USF this will be around the end of each semester and I will remind you about this requirement during the last week of class. I will also teach you how to fill out this form later in the semester. For now what you need to know is that you will be required to complete this form, and like all of the other forms, you and your supervisor should keep copies (you should keep the original). You will submit a copy to me as well via Canvas.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>At USF, you also need to fill an excel log known as the activity log, which is the document we use to document your experiences hours internally. We will explain more about this in our next lecture. You will submit copies of the BACB Experience Supervision Forms and the excel log to me on a monthly basis. The purpose of this submission is that I can give you feedback if you are not completing them correctly, but also that I have documentation of your experience hours and your performance towards accruing the required hours. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Here is a sample of completed BACB Experience Supervision Form. You should make sure to always bring blank copies to supervision meetings so that they are filled out as the supervision is completed rather than later. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>For the supervision forms, make sure that all sections are completed, including name of supervisor and supervisee. If you have multiple meetings during one of the supervisory periods (week) and one of them is a group whereas the other is individual, I recommend indicating that by using the letters I and G as shown here. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>If you only have one supervisor and one experience, you should document all of your experience hours in one form. In this form, you should also include all the supervision you received from that supervisor as well as the independent experience (direct and indirect hours) you complete for that week.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>If you have multiple supervisors or multiple experiences, you will need to fill out multiple experience supervision forms for each week. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>For the section on “characteristics of supervision”, check off all that apply and make sure to indicate which BACB task list skills were covered during this supervisory period. I suggest that you keep a copy of the BACB Task list with you so you can refer to it during supervision meetings.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Your supervisor will then complete the evaluation section, providing a score of satisfactory, needs improvement, unsatisfactory, or not applicable for each of the items listed in this table. Your supervisor will then provide a general score for your performance.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>Finally, you and your supervisor should both sign the form. Per the BACB requirements, forms should be completed in black or blue pen.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>This past year the BACB put in effect a training requirement for supervisor and supervisees. And BCBAs that want to provide supervision must complete an 8-hr training and a module via the BACB website (about 2 hrs long). Your supervisors were required to submit proof of completion of these trainings to me.</textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You are also required to complete an online module (about 2 hrs) before you can begin to accrue experience hours. </textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'></textformat><textformat leading='0' tabstops='[0, 48, 96, 144]' blockindent='0' indent='0'>You should create a BACB portal account and complete the module there. You will be required to upload a copy of your certificate to me next week. You can also find the portal account link in the resources tab on the right top corner.</textformat></html>
